Australian Dingo

The Australian Dingo is a true primitive dog breed and one of the Australian unique features. Contrary to the common beliefs, Dingo Dogs are not the ancestors of all modern dogs, but the descendants of the common ancestors that remained almost unchanged. Dingo dogs have never been fully domesticated. They have much in common with both domestic dogs and wolves.

The Australian Dingo is rare outside of Australia. It’s found only in the wild state and cannot be exported to other countries. In some parts of Australia, Dingo dogs live in wildlife parks and zoos. In other areas, they are considered to be pests, as they prey on a variety of animals and may even raid poultry.

The Australian Dingo cannot be kept as a pet, not only because it’s illegal, but also because it’s not suited for the role of a family companion. Dingoes taken from the wild at the young age can be kept as domestic dogs, if raised with a firm hand. Early socialization and obedience training are necessary for Dingo dogs kept as pets. Adult Dingoes readily return back to the wild when given a chance.

The characteristic features of the Australian Dingo are intelligence, independence, and ability to think on their own. Dingoes are strong, lean, and muscular; they are able to withstand hot and cold weather and well adapt to any climate and living conditions. Dingo puppies are normally sold at $500-$1000. This breed is generally healthier than most purebreds. Tamed Dingoes don’t attempt their owners for pack status, like wolves do. For Australian aborigines, Dingo dogs were hunting companions and also provided warmth during the cold nights.

As for the appearance, the Dingo is a medium-sized dog averaging 50 cm at the withers and 30 kg in weight. Compared to domestic dogs, Dingoes have longer muzzles and stronger canine teeth. The typical coat colors of the Australian Dingo are yellow, tan, black, sandy, and white. Albino and brindle dogs are rare. Other coat colors are the result of hybridization with domestic dogs. The Australian Dingo is larger than Asian type f the breed.
